Peace Lily Dramatic Wilt & Drooping

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) · Drooping & Limp Foliage

Loss of turgor pressure causing stems and leaves to hang downwards limp.

Peace lilies are dramatic communicators; sudden drooping almost always reflects acute dehydration or conversely root damage from soggy soil.

Possible causes

  • Dry root ball: The soil has shrunk away from the pot edge
  • Overwatered root suffocating: Roots cannot absorb water despite wet soil
  • Sudden temperature shock or air conditioner draft

Care steps

  1. Feel pot weight and soil top: If light and crumbly, bottom-water the pot in a basin of lukewarm water for 25 minutes.
  2. If soil is already soaked and heavy: Check roots for rot; aerate soil with a wooden chopstick and pause watering.
  3. Shield from direct midday sun and cold draft vents.

Prevention tips

  • Water just as the foliage softens slightly before full collapse
  • Keep room temperature consistently between 18°C and 26°C
