Monstera Lower Leaf Yellowing
Monstera Deliciosa (Monstera deliciosa) ยท Yellow Leaves
Chlorosis where leaves lose green pigmentation, starting from lower or outer foliage.
Classic sign of overwatering leading to compromised root aeration, or natural aging of the oldest basal leaf.
Possible causes
- Excess moisture in dense potting mix lacking adequate perlite
- Pot has no drainage hole or sits in standing saucer water
- Natural senescence (only 1 single bottom leaf yellowing slowly)
Care steps
- Inspect drainage hole: Empty saucers immediately and ensure no stagnant water remains.
- Gently check roots: If soil smells sour or roots are dark and soft, trim rotten ends and repot in fresh airy mix.
- Relocate to brighter indirect light: Bright light accelerates moisture uptake and leaf recovery.
Prevention tips
- Always use containers with drainage holes
- Wait for upper 50% of the pot to dry before drenching again
- Rotate pot monthly for balanced phototropism
